Peace Of Mind

Tecasafe-Plus-GenericTenCate Tecasafe Plus earns a distinction. Developed exclusively by TenCate Protective Fabrics to safeguard wearers from flash fires while keeping them comfortable, it’s the only innovation in the last four decades. Less than seven years since its introduction with millions of garments made and worn, TenCate Tecasafe Plus is the fastest growing textile in the last decade among all FR fabrics worldwide. It’s not hard to understand why.

Comfort comes first

The primary complaint from anyone who wears any other garments: It’s hot, sweaty and uncomfortable. This is especially true for chemically treated cotton.

Electricians-in-Tecasafe-PlusAs a single fiber, cotton will naturally wick up sweat like a sponge and weigh the wearer down, removing any opportunity for the fabric to breath in its water-logged state. Tecasafe Plus uses a triple blend of fibers that actively wick moisture away from the skin while encouraging evaporation — all part of Coolderm Technology. This keeps the fabric lighter and a more continuous airflow.

TenCate Tecasafe Plus arrives soft, requiring no trips through the washing machine to make it softer. Naturally flammable, the process to make cotton fire retardant requires toxic chemicals and a process that usually results in the cotton coming out stiff and hard from all the layers added onto the fabric.

No special care

Tecasafe Plus uses fibers that are flame resistant from the beginning. Without any special chemical treatments to enhance or add FR to fabric, Tecasafe Plus will be FR forever.

Dig the fabric up decades from now in an archaeological find and it will still be flame resistant.

That’s not the case with chemically treated cotton or even cotton blends like the common 88/12, which is 88 percent cotton and 12 percent nylon (or other fiber). All of these normally use the phrase “life of the garment,” which means a certain number of washes — usually between 30 and 50 washes.

That laundering process requires particular care. TenCate Tecasafe Plus can be cleaned using practically any laundry detergent.

Not so with chemically treated cotton and cotton blends.

One must avoid any detergents that include oxidized additives like OxiClean®, Tide® Boost with OXI, Gain® with Oxi Boost and pretty much anything with an oxygen bleaching product to boost whites and colors.

The oxygen bleaching weakens the bond between the flame retardant chemicals and the cotton fibers, causing the fabric to become dangerous to wear.Of course, never use fabric softener or a detergent with fabric softener additive to any FR textile. Fabric softeners are flammable and, no matter how many times it’s rinsed, residual fabric softener can remain.
